Exceptionally rare and original, 1856 John C. Fremont / William H. Dayton (the First Republican Candidates for President and Vice President) Presidential Election Campaign Ballot from the State of Illinois with Abraham Lincoln as the first Presidential Elector listed on the Ticket. This is actually a Fremont Coattails Ballot titled “Fremont & Bissell Ticket” with Republican Gubernatorial Candidate William H. Bissell being listed on the Ballot along with the Presidential Electors for thew Fremont / Dayton Ticket. Besides Abraham Lincoln, William Henry Herndon (Lincoln’s Law Partner and close friend) is also listed as one of the Republican Presidential Electors!! This original 1856 Presidential Campaign Ballot measures approx. 4" by 9 1/4" and is titled “Fremont & Bissell Ticket”. Text below the title list the 1856 Republican Candidates for Statewide Offices. Below this text are listed the Republican Party Presidential Electors from the state of Illinois with “A. Lincoln” listed as the first Elector and William H. Herndon farther down on the list of eleven Presidential Electors.. In 1856 slavery was the omnipresent issue, and opposition to the extension of slavery into the territories motivated the rise of the nascent Republican Party. The Republicans and the nativist Know Nothings (known formally as the American Party) competed to replace the defunct Whig Party as the primary opposition to the Democrats. The 1856 Republican National Convention nominated a ticket led by Fremont, an explorer and military officer who had served in the Mexican–American War. The Know Nothings, who ignored slavery and instead emphasized anti-immigration and anti-Catholic policies, nominated a ticket led by former Whig President Millard Fillmore. Abraham Lincoln actually was considered as a possible Vice-Presidential candidate on the Republican but eventually the Convention settled on Dayton. We actually had no idea that Abraham Lincoln was one of the Republican Presidential Electors from the State of Illinois in 1856 until we first saw his name on this exceptionally rare Ballot!! This rare and original, 1856 John C. Fremont Campaign Ballot is in excellent condition – clean and crisp and exceptionally well preserved with large margins and just a few tiny spots of staining.
