Fantastic WWI M18 German army stahlhelm painted with trench camoflage and addorned with a skull and crossbones on the front. 100% original WWI period applied. I aquired this and a few other artifacts from the family of a AEF veteran. Typical symetrical camo patern for the day. The skull and crossbones send this helmet to another level though. During WWI certain highly motivated German combat soldiers became the first storm troopers. These soldiers took on a death or glory approach to thier duties. They would load up with hand grenades and close combat weapons, and infiltrate allied lines useing thier small numbers to gain the advantage of suprise. The small groups of heavily armed storm troopers caused confision, disruption and mayhem among enemy lines and earned a place of honor among thier comrades. The mere rumor of these troops operating within a given sector had a devastating effect on allied morale. These small motivated groups, useing special tactics, often allowed them to overcome much larger forces. Unlike many elite units, the early storm troopers often committed to the upcoming action by taking special care to identify themselves as no quarter, "no mercy", warriors. The skull and crossbones worn in the open indicated to the enemy that the wearer was expecting to achieve victory at any cost and that no quarter was asked for or expected. As in the earliest use of the skull and bones simble, the meaning is clear, "SURRENDER OR DIE". The message was effective. A huge amount of allied prisoners were captured by these units. This helmet auction is for the shell only. Battle damage to the top appears to have two bullets glancing off near crown. Also battle damage to the bottom rear. Serial number, "R1017". The mfr. code is, "ET66". No liner or chinstrap. It appears to have been covered with a clear laquer quite some time ago as it is now crackled from age in some areas and run down on the inside. Some tiny, tiny spots of white paint on it as well. FANTASTIC WWI GERMAN ISSUE STAHLHELM WITH SUPER NICE CAMO PAINT WITH SKULL & CROSSBONES INSIGINIA! SH priority fee in the US $12.00. If you prefer not to use Paypal I will accept other forms of payment. All international auctions over $100.00 requires World priority postage. Please do not ask for favors on customs forms.
