A rare and fine Victorian Silver gilt travelling companion cutlery set , possibly an officers campaign set. A boxed set of exquisite quality comprising of three cutlery items (knife fork and spoon ) and a corkscrew . The three tapering handles to the utensils fit inside each other for space saving storage . The smallest also houses a folding travelling corkscrew. The three utensils screw into the handles to form the completed item. Absolutely super quality and clearly formerly the possession of a notable gentleman or an officer . The ends of the handles marked with a bee crest - the bee in armorial or heraldic terms is a sign of industry, creativity, wealth, diligence and eloquence. The Egyptians used it as a symbol of regal power. In armory, it is used to represent well-governed industry. Made by Frederick Purnell and each piece marked accordingly FP together with the silver hall mark for London 1880. Frederick Purnell renowned for the production of top of the range quality 19th century travelling companions in silver . Size of box approximately 4.75" x 2.75" .
