I picked up this vintage early Showa era (c. 1930's) goban (go board) at a dealer only auction in Japan last year. I have been buying fine go boards at auction in Japan for over 35 years now and find this board to be a great bargain due to its warm aged patina as well as its thick 6" ( 15 cm) center grain of what I am told is solid Kaya wood. It also has four nicely carved 4 1/2" wooden legs (11.5 cm) for a total height of 10 1/2" (26.5 cm)This board has been well played yet well loved, and while it shows minor signs of use it remains overall in very fine condition. There are some light divots on the top where go ishi (stones) have been placed with enthusiasm. (see picture 4). This well cured stock of center cut kaya wood is sure to stand the test of time for another century or longer. The four carved legs are fully removable if one wants to use this board as a table top piece rather that playing in the traditional method sitting on the tatami floor. Although the total height of 10 1/2" makes it a perfect floor style for traditional Asian style play. It stands flat on the floor and has a level playing surface and the top grid is still clear and sharp. The top measures 17 1/2" by 16" (44.5 x 40.5 cm) stands 10 1/2" high overall (26.5 cm). Weighing in at a hefty 29 pounds. Enjoy the enlarged pictures. A comparable new board would cost over $7,000 in Japan today, yet in many ways I find this one even more attractive due to its years of loving use character and warm aged patina as well as its time proven, well cured stock. Please note: the goishi (stones and bowls) seen in the first picture are not included but are being sold in a current listing on sailerking. For the go player who wants to have one of the finest boards available at any cost (and one with a warm patina and character) at a fraction of the cost, this is the board for you.
