These vintage blown glass beads are commonly called mercury glass although mercury has not been used in a long time. They are crystal clear & hollow glass and are silver lined - similar to the beads used in those wonderful vintage holiday garlands. They are hollow because they were blown into molds. Probably made in Japan, these should not be strung on plain cotton or other fabric thread as it may cut through. Because of the way they were made and cut apart the edges can be sharper than on "regular" beads. Always used a reinforced stringing material for these types of beads.They are a rectangular shape and measure almost 5mm long x almost 2mm wide. You will receive a full, 12 strand hank of approximately 600 beads. The hanks measure approximately 10" long (beads only) & you will receive a total of approx. 120". There are 50 beads on each strand & they are bright & shiny with no discoloration or oxidation. Although old they have been stored very carefully & are in very good condition. There will be some broken beads but not very many.A number of years ago we purchased a very large quantity of vintage mercury glass beads. We just found our stash of this shape & are keeping the price down just in time for holiday projects. These petite silver beads are ideal for Christmas tree garlands and decorations.
