Stunning Hermes Paris Scarf - "Terres Precieuses" This is an auction for a Stunning RARE Hermes Paris silk scarf "Terres Precieuses" (Precious Lands) Designed in 2002 by Annie Faivre (her signature is at Photograph 7), this scarf fabulously captures the wonderful jewellery worn traditionally by the Berber women in North Africa. Inspiration: Similar to another scarf from the Hermes collection, Parures des Sables (Desert Finery), Faivre takes for her inspiration for this scarf the fine jewellery made by the Tuareg and Berber silversmiths and worn by Berber women from Morocco to Libya. The inset in the lead photograph (full size at Photograph 20) is of an oil painting by the French artist Emile Vernet-Lecomte in 1870, of a beautiful Berber woman adorned with a headdress, necklaces, earrings and bracelets in the style captured in this scarf so beautifully. A key feature in the scarf is the fibula (an elaborate triangular silver brooch, often engraved and inlaid with coloured stones and worn on a dress, on the chest or as hair ornaments), Hermès said of it: "...life asserts itself in these fibula with their symbols of carnal desire and fecundity". Berber jewellery serves a much wider purpose than simple adornment. The jewellery a woman wears identifies her as a member of a clan or tribe, it is a sign of her wealth, it reflects cultural traditions and it has power beyond the visual, to protect her from the evil eye. This jewellery will always be made of silver, as gold is considered evil. Some pieces will be worn every day, others – the finest – will be saved for occasions such as festivals, pilgrimages and funerals. At Photographs 11, 15 & 16. I have shown examples of real antique Berber jewellery alongside extracts from the scarf depicting similar workmanship and styles. Photograph 19 shows a scene from the lands in the South of Morocco where the craft I understand thrives to today. Description: The scarf is in an ivory white/cream colour way with the tree fronds in brown and the jewellery in subtle pastel shades of sage and mint green, terracotta, lemon, lilac, salmon pink, burgundy and taupe amongst others. The detail is absolutely exquisite. All photographs are true to colour and any variation between pics is just due to being taken in different light. The exact same colour way can be seen at the Hermes Scarf International Collector's (HSCI) site at the following link: HSCI - Terres Precieuses Condition: Excellent: The hems are "as new" (see Photograph 9). No marks, pulls, holes or colour run whatsoever. Has hardly been worn. The care tag is attached (see Photograph 7).
